Use resistance bands to make exercises harder or easier

published in Sports on 03/10/2024 - updated at 23/06/2026

Do you enjoy working out at home using your own body weight? Are push-ups, squats, planks, and hip bridges part of your workout routine? Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced athlete, resistance bands are a great way to take your training to the next level. You don’t need an expensive weight bench for an effective home workout.

Often, a resistance band is the best workout companion for home and on the go. In this article, you’ll learn how to combine bodyweight training with resistance training.

What is bodyweight training?

Bodyweight training focuses on complex and functional exercise sequences.

Multiple muscles are engaged simultaneously.

Isolated training of smaller muscle groups is quite rare in pure bodyweight training. Your own body weight serves as both resistance and the weight to be moved.

You can make the exercises easier or harder by changing the angles or by using or omitting certain parts of your body. One advantage is that you can train anywhere without a lot of fancy equipment.

Making exercises with resistance bands more challenging

For a muscle to grow, it’s crucial that it remains under tension for a certain amount of time with an appropriate load. This required time under tension is typically indicated by the number of repetitions. For muscle growth, you should aim for 6–15 repetitions per set, depending on your pace, for at least three sets. If you’re already able to do more than 20 repetitions during bodyweight training, that’s a sign that you should increase the intensity of your workout.

Resistance bands are a great way to effectively increase resistance. This ensures that your bodyweight training continues to provide an adequate training stimulus even as you become more advanced. For example, you can make push-ups more challenging by wrapping a band around your back.

Make exercises with resistance bands easier

Resistance bands aren’t just for making your bodyweight exercises harder—they can also make them easier. Take pull-ups, for example. If you’re learning to do pull-ups, you usually can’t perform the full range of motion right away because you lack the strength.

This is where the resistance band comes in. Hook the band onto the pull-up bar and stand or kneel in the loop. With the help of the band—or even multiple bands—you should be able to perform the pull-up through its full range of motion.

Conclusion

No matter what your fitness level is, resistance bands are a great way to supplement your workout. If you regularly increase the intensity of your bodyweight training with resistance bands, nothing will stand in the way of your goals of gaining strength and building muscle.

The effectiveness of bodyweight training alone is significantly enhanced when combined with resistance bands.
