Relieving Tension Headaches – Relieving Headaches Caused by Neck Tension

Tension headaches triggered by neck tension are a common type of headache. The neck muscles play a crucial role in the development of this pain. When the muscles in the neck area are chronically tense or overworked, the pain can radiate to the head and cause tension headaches.

Causes of Tension Headaches Often Related to Neck Pain

The exact causes of tension headaches are not fully understood, but they are often associated with various factors, including:

Stress: Emotional or physical stress can lead to increased muscle tension in the neck area.

Poor posture: Poor posture, especially during sedentary activities, can strain the neck muscles and lead to tension.

Prolonged sitting: Spending long hours in front of a computer or in an awkward position can strain the neck muscles.

Lack of sleep: Insufficient sleep can worsen or trigger headaches.

Symptoms of Tension Headaches

Pressing, pulling pain: The pain is often dull and pressing and can affect the entire head or only certain areas.

Neck stiffness: Stiffness or tension in the neck area may accompany the headaches.

Worsening with movement: Headaches may worsen when you move your head or strain your neck.

Mild to moderate intensity: In general, tension headaches are not as intense as migraines.

Treatment of Tension Headaches Caused by Neck Tension

Relaxation techniques: Breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, myofascial self-massage, or yoga can help reduce muscle tension in the neck area.

Heat therapy: Warm compresses or a warm bath can improve blood circulation and relieve tension.

Physical therapy: A physical therapist can recommend exercises and techniques to strengthen the neck muscles and correct postural habits.

Medication: In some cases, your doctor may prescribe pain relievers or muscle relaxants to alleviate your symptoms.

Avoiding Triggers: Be mindful of factors that worsen your neck tension and headaches, such as stress, lack of sleep, or poor posture.

Breathing Exercises

If you experience frequent or very painful headaches, it’s important to see your doctor to rule out other serious conditions and receive appropriate treatment.

Here are a few exercises you can try with a fascia ball or TRIGGER:

Trigger Point Massage for the Neck

While standing, place your shoulder or neck on the TRIGGER. Find a tender spot. Stay on that spot. Focus on your breathing.

Temporal Muscle Massage

Place the BALL 08 against the side of your head with one hand. Massage the temporal muscle slowly and in a controlled manner. Apply some pressure, but keep it comfortable for you. Repeat the exercise on the other side.

Upper Trapezius Muscle Massage

Stand next to a doorframe. Place the BALL to the side of the doorframe. Step into a lunge. Lean your upper body forward so that the BALL is wedged between the junction of your neck and shoulder and the doorframe. Work your trapezius muscle this way. Keep your head in line with your spine. Let your arms hang loosely at your sides. Hold the position on any tender spots for about 15 seconds. As you do so, try to slowly move your head toward the opposite side.

If you also have a massage gun, feel free to use it to relieve tension in your neck—you can do this either on your own or with a partner

Trapezius Massage with Mobilization and a Partner

Start in a seated position. Ask a partner to assist you. Your partner massages the neck area from the shoulder toward the cervical spine. Meanwhile, move your head in all directions. You should only use the massage gun on soft tissue—unless you have our SOFT PEAKS—otherwise, be sure to avoid the cervical spine. We recommend massage levels 1–2.

Trapezius Massage

Start in a seated position. Treat the tissue between the shoulder and the cervical spine. Of course, the same rule applies here: The Gun may only be used on soft tissue, unless you have our SOFT PEAKS. We recommend massage levels 1–2.

Conclusion—Tension Headaches

Tension headaches caused by neck tension are a very common type of headache. These headaches are often triggered by stress, poor posture, prolonged sitting, and muscle strain in the neck area. The symptoms are usually mild to moderate in intensity and often manifest as a pressing or pulling headache.

Treating tension headaches caused by neck tension requires a holistic approach aimed at reducing muscle tension, avoiding triggers, and improving posture. Relaxation techniques, heat therapy, physical therapy, and, if necessary, medication can help relieve pain.

Even more important, however, is the prevention of neck tension, as it is often the root of the problem. By reducing stress, improving posture, engaging in regular physical activity, and getting adequate sleep, the risk of tension headaches can be minimized.
